Job safety analysis preparation and implementation

OSHA requires that employees receive training in hazard recognition [29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)]. The JSA (Job Safety Analysis) is a proven and effective tool for recognizing, identifying and controlling hazards within the workplace.

The JSA Training presentation is based upon OSHA’s JHA (Job Hazard Analysis) guidelines; it addresses the benefits of a pre-task analysis in diminishing the potential for the occurrence of predictable incidents.  We address the process of creating a JSA, along with hazard recognition and identification.  We further address OSHA’s hierarchy of hazard mitigation controls in remediating or abating the identified hazards.  We go over a sample JSA from development to completion and address the typical operator requirements as well as the BSEE requirements for JSA’s under SEMS II.

Upon completion of this course, trainees should be able to do the following:

    • Understand the JSA process and the steps involved in preparing and utilizing a JSA.
    • Effectively identify common workplace hazards, particularly those that pose the highest risk.
    • Select appropriate hazard controls for effectively addressing the perceived hazards.

    The JSA Process includes:

    1. Selection of a task that involves risk at some level.

    2. Organizing the task into sequential steps.

    3. Identifying multiple hazards potentially associated with each of these steps.

    4. Selecting appropriate engineering and/or administrative controls to address the identified hazards.

    5. Selection of appropriate PPE to supplement these hazard controls.

    6. Reviewing and understanding the completed analysis.

    7. Procuring the appropriate approvals or authorization.

    8. Implementing the approved JSA.

    9. Modifying or upgrading the JSA as needed.

    10. Recordkeeping requirements for completed JSA’s.

Classes are limited to 20 students and generally last from 2 to 4 hours. We can make a special allowance for 30 attendees but it is preferable to split up the training into 2 sessions of 15 attendees each. A quiz will be given at the conclusion of the course and a certificate of attendance will be issued.
