In the current age, using the Internet has become essential to communication and gaining access to information, much like the telephone and newspapers were to earlier generations. Familiarity with the Internet comes with a certain level of expectation regarding the attractiveness and ease of use of web pages. Web designers need to create effective and successful websites. If users find your website difficult to navigate, they may not visit it again. HTML5 and CSS3 are some of the most integral and evolving web technologies that enable you to structure content and present it on the web. Knowledge of these languages will help you create web pages that are easy to read and appealing to users. This course lays the foundation for mastering these two popular web publishing technologies.

This course is designed as an introduction to HTML and CSS for those who want to learn to develop standards-compliant web content, with a focus on current HTML5 and CSS3 standards. This course can be taught on Microsoft® Windows®, Apple® Mac OS® X, or Linux®, and supports developers who work in any of those environments.

To ensure your success in this course, you should have experience using a computer operating system such as Windows or Mac OS X, and using web browsers to access the web as an end user. No prior knowledge of web development is required. You can obtain this level of skill and knowledge by taking a Logical Operations course, such as Using Microsoft® Windows® 8.1 or Microsoft® Windows® 8.1: Transition from Windows® 7.

For this course, you will need one computer for each student and one for the instructor. Each computer will need the following minimum hardware configurations:

1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB hard disk or larger (you should have at least 50 MB of free hard disk space available for installing the web browsers)

CD-ROM drive

Keyboard and mouse (or other pointing device)

1,024 × 768 resolution monitor recommended

Network cards and cabling for local network access

Internet access (contact your local network administrator)

Printer (optional) or an installed printer driver

Projection system to display the instructor’s computer screen

The following is the recommended configuration.

Microsoft Windows® 7 or 8, or more recent versions of Windows.

NotePad++, or a similar programmer’s text editor with line numbering and syntax coloring for HTML5 and CSS3.

Google Chrome™ (latest version) or another web browser with extensive support for HTML5 to use as the primary browser for testing and development.

Secondary web browsers, which you can use for testing cross-browser compatibility. For this course, we recommend that you use:

Mozilla Firefox® version 29 or later.

Microsoft Internet Explorer® version 11 or later

Opera™ web browser version 21 or later

If necessary, software for viewing the course slides (instructor machine only)
